Interview by Ben | Angelscout Photography Assistant: Kenneth Mckeough | Hmua: The Beauty Maven
Fitness Athlete, LaRita Ward is on her grind. From battling it out on the competition stage, to crushing it in the gym with her equally fit hubby. LaRita clues us in on how to keep in the game with our fitness fanatic better halves.
“I lift mostly for stress and tension relief, because it makes me feel strong, and because of the physical benefits too!”
BEN: You are in amazing shape. What is your fitness background and what is your current regimen like?
LARITA: I grew up on Kodiak Island, AK, and was always outside. My family also depended on subsistence and although there is some drawbacks, not been able to get fresh fruit and vegetables in the winter sometimes, we did have a very healthy diet, mostly seafood.
I’ve been a runner and also have a love for team sports, volleyball and basketball. I played basketball in college. I have my bachelors of science degree in Kinesiology. I can say that I’ve tried and I’ve played almost every sport and have lifted weights since high school!
I currently lift weights 5 days a week and I will do some type of cardio two days a week! I lift with intensity, and have built up the stamina mostly in the last couple of years. I lift mostly for stress and tension relief, because it makes me feel strong, and because of the physical benefits too! I also love hiking and being outdoors!
B: Your hubby is also a fantastic athlete and is in incredible shape as well. Do you two workout together?
“I feel very independent and confident in knowing what I need in the gym!”
L: I absolutely love to work out with my husband! When we are in the gym he pushes me just enough. We are both constantly learning and teaching each other new things. He doesn’t handle me with white gloves, but he doesn’t yell in my face either. [laughs] He will calmly tell me to keep going or tell me that I can handle more weight, but he is always strict about form and safety.
We have a very good understanding and I know when he is just coming from a stressful day at work and needs to get some hard-core stress relief in the gym without a lot of talking. For both of us, weight lifting is about improving our fitness and sculpting our bodies, but also about relieving some tension before we get home for the day.
Sometimes my husband and I have different goals for the week or the day, and I will work out with a girlfriend, but more often myself. There was a time in my life when I didn’t want to work out without a partner, but I feel very independent and confident in knowing what I need in the gym! With our busy schedules I just get it in when the time is best for me!
B: Sounds like a pretty fit-tastic relationship! Although, obviously not the case for you and your hubby, there is often a situation these days where women in relationships are all about the gym but their men aren’t. What advice would you give to these men? Would they be better off if they got off their asses and got with the program?
“The hardest part is getting there and once you do, you will start to feel the vigor!”
L: If you are dating or married to a woman who also has a love for fitness, you are a very lucky man. If you are with a woman who is trying to better herself and just getting into fitness, you are a very lucky man as well!
Here is a true fact…women love sharing common interests with their man. Wining and dining and parties and eating good food week in and week out are great. At some point though, getting drunk and passing out, sharing a common interest in food, and not having any goals towards your health or future together will start to show their effects!
If you want to keep that lady, yes, it’s time to get off your ass! If you lack motivation, don’t wait for it to come to you! Studies prove that action proceeds motivation and everything else will follow! The hardest part is getting there and once you do, you will start to feel the vigor!
Get outside your comfort zone and try. Your lady will be extra appreciative and you will like the results too!
…if lifting weights and going to the gym is not for you, find a type of physical activity that is!”
It’s not even about being vain, it’s about becoming mentally strong, bettering yourself, and studies show you may even become smarter, while you become stronger! This is one of the best ways to spend quality time with your woman!
Now if you aren’t ready to get off the sofa and join your lady in the gym, at least show some interest and encourage her. And, if lifting weights and going to the gym is not for you, find a type of physical activity that is!
Whatever you do, do not discourage that woman, you are lucky to have, from going to the gym. Don’t be jealous when she goes to the gym. Don’t make her feel bad about the time she’s spending there versus the time spent with you. Don’t follow her to the gym to make sure she is actually going there. I’ve seen all of these things happen and what is worse than a man without motivation, is a man that is insecure. VIGOROUS
