A first date is a crucial time for making a good impression. If you find yourself without many second dates, you might not be making the best impression. Here are four things that will turn someone off on the first date.

#1 Discussing An Ex

“Any type of negativity and complaining, whether about an ex or other things, is not going to make you look good.”

If you’re on a first date with someone, the last thing you should do is discuss any of your exes. Don’t compare your ex to the person you’re on a date with. Don’t tell your date all the things your ex did wrong and why you had to end things with them. Don’t attempt to bond over how awful you think your exes are. This isn’t a good way to start a relationship. Any type of negativity and complaining, whether about an ex or other things, is not going to make you look good. Focus on the positive things in your life and you’ll be more attractive to your date.

#2 Talking Too Much

“You might have a lot you want your date to know about you, but remember that it’s only the first date…”

If you dominate the conversation, this will probably turn your date off. It’s important that you ask questions and allow your date to talk as well. People who only want to talk about themselves are not usually appealing to others.

You might have a lot you want your date to know about you, but remember that it’s only the first date, and you shouldn’t divulge everything about yourself at once. Let details out a little at a time. This is easier to do when you allow your date to talk about himself or herself as well. Ask your date questions about their life. Allow your date to ask you questions. Don’t be afraid to leave a little mystery for future dates.

#3 Bragging

If you don’t want to turn off your date, don’t brag. Sharing information about your successes is fine if they come up naturally, but don’t list all of your accomplishments and income thinking it will impress your date and make them more attracted to you. If you act like a show-off, you may turn off your date and make them wonder if you’re overly concerned with material items and status. If you and your date are discussing your mutual love of running, you can share that you recently ran your first half-marathon or beat a personal record. If you like to brag in order to feel superior to others, your date might not find this an attractive quality.

#4 Drinking Too Much

“You might think it’s OK to indulge because you both share a love of wine, but you want to practice self-control…”

If you and your date share of a love of wine, this is something you can certainly discuss on your first date. If you decide to try a new wine together, make sure that you don’t overdo it. You might think it’s OK to indulge because you both share a love of wine, but you want to practice self-control and make sure you keep control of your faculties. If you drink too much, you might end up acting out of character. You want to make a good impression on a first date, so avoid drinking too much.

“If you relate to any of the above first-date bad habits, working on them might help you gain more second dates.”
